REVIEW ICOND 2016
The fifth ICOND - "International Conference on Nuclear Decommissioning" - was held in November 2016 in cooperation with TÜV Rheinland and the Belgian company TECNUBEL in the Eurogress in Aachen. Of the approximately 290 participants, 32% came from abroad this year, which means that the trend of an ever-increasing internationalization of ICOND continues. In addition, more than twenty companies presented new products and services throughout the event and used the opportunity to cultivate or establish contacts. The spectrum of participants included representatives of industry, technical safety organisations, supervisory and approval authorities, energy suppliers as well as research and development.
The focus of this year's ICOND was on the latest developments in the fields of decommissioning and nuclear waste disposal as well as on experiences from ongoing decommissioning projects in Germany and abroad. Ms Heinen-Esser, Managing Director of the newly founded Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE), presented the results of the “Commission on the Storage of High-level Radioactive Waste”. Mr. Homan, Managing Director of PreussenElektra, reported on the planning of their own decommissioning projects and future developments.
Within the Pre-Conference Workshop, new technologies and their use in national and international decommissioning projects were presented. At the beginning of ICOND, the focus was on current legal regulations as well as experiences from ongoing decommissioning projects. This was supplemented by a panel discussion on the current German bill on the reorganization of the financial responsibility of nuclear waste management. In the following days, the demolition and disposal of concrete structures, remote handling in dismantling and the management of radioactive waste were adressed. In total 31 specialists presented different international perspectives and management strategies in addition to the current status of the German decommissioning projects. For example, Magnus Oskarsson of Vattenfall presented the nuclear power plant decommissioning in Sweden.
We are pleased about the positive response as well as the great interest in the ICOND, and we would like to welcome you again in November 2017, again at the Eurogress in Aachen.
